Kalavarda is on that north coast, our ‘bicycle village’. It is a great spot for a holiday based around one place with trips on hybrids or ATBs. Mass tourism has not reached Kalavarda yet. You stay in a small hotel run by a hospitable Greek family. Our base is suitable for easy trips in the coastal area up to tough routes inland on sealed and unsealed roads. Three hundred people live in Kalavarda, most of whom work in tourism but also continue the agricultural business of the family. It is the same story for Irini and Yiannis from the friendly Hotel Vouras. They also maintain a sizeable vineyard and orchard, bake their own bread and cherish their cats and their donkey. Hotel Vouras has generously sized rooms with a balcony or sitting area, and good sanitary facilities. The front veranda is a pleasant terrace where you can enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner, savoring the hosts’ homegrown products used in the meals. Kalavarda has simple facilities around the village square, including a grocer and a little restaurant. There is a bar at the nearby beach which also has sufficient shade provided by small tamarind trees, and showers. Kalavarda is in a flat coastal area. Inland it ranges from hilly to mountainous around the Profitis Ilias (798 m high). Easy rides go to the diggings at the ancient Kamiros (8 km), the little port of Kamiros Skala (36 km) and the monastery of Agios Silas (22 km). Those who are up to more can try out the butterfly valley of Petaloudes (32 km), the wine village Embonas (60 km), the stunning capital Rhodes Town (day ride of 75 km, but you can also take the bus from Kalavarda), the castle of Kritinia (44 km) and beautiful villages like Psinthos and Platania (round trips of about 50 km). Perhaps the jewel in the crown of your stay in Kalavarda will be the summit of the Profitis Ilias (50 km). Besides being a great base for trips on hybrid bicycles, Kalavarda is also good for a mountain bike holiday. Unsealed roads, cart tracks and paths crisscross the surrounding countryside, leading to desolate villages and remote vineyards. We have routes from about 25 km to 70 km. 1 km = 0.62 miles
