The North American native people had a name for it: ‘the river that walks’. The St-Lawrence River, majestic waterway amongst the world’s greatest, has always played a major role in the history of Quebec and Canada. In 1608, Samuel de Champlain gave the river it’s official name of St-Lawrence River, in the same year he founded the city of Quebec. Starting in the XVIIth Century, the launching of the fur trade marked a turning point in the history of North America. The French, from that point on, pushed the exploration of the St-Lawrence valley further and further the west, seeking new fur trading territories and establishing settlements. From this quest will arise Trois-Rivières and Ville-Marie (now Montreal), further penetration of settlers inside the continent and the advancement of sedentary occupation of the territory. The way of life of native populations would be changed irrevocably.

Starting point of this Tour, named in memory of the city’s founder, the historical city of Quebec played throughout the centuries many strategic roles : fur trading post, colonial settlement, transfer harbour for seafaring ships, fortress of the St-Lawrence River and Capital of ‘Nouvelle-France’ and then modern Quebec.

The Champlain Tour will take you in the footsteps of the explorers, who like Champlain in 1603, carried out expedition upon expedition seeking the route to the treasures of the west. The Tour will take you along the ‘Chemin du Roy’ through some of the most beautiful villages of Quebec and through ‘Patriotes’ country. Expect many pleasurable discoveries as you coast through a landscape rich with natural and historical heritage and the ever present Québécois ‘joie-de-vivre’.
