National Capital Tour
From/to Montréal to/from Ottawa. 7 days . ship name Latitude Amsterdam (Comfort DeLuxe)
Bike Barge Canada Montreal and Ottawa 2010

Level of Difficulty: Easy

The Spring in National Capital Tour explores two of Canada’s most beautiful cities, Montreal and Ottawa. Linking those two cities will be a bucolic interlude made to fit a spring cycling excursion.
Asserting its presence in the middle of the majestic St-Lawrence River, Montreal has become a bustling city. Quebec’s economic and cultural metropolis and city of paradox, Montreal knows how to balance green open spaces and skyscrapers, heritage and modernism, a taste of Europe and the energetic beat of the Americas. A the other end of the itinerary, Ottawa is a city which has retained its human dimension and is an essential stop for whoever wants to understand Canada’s history and panoramas. Ottawa is first and foremost Parliament Hill, the seat of Canada’s Federal Government, which rules majestically over the Ottawa River. Ottawa is also the Rideau Canal (declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO), a link forged out of 19th Century military strategy between Ottawa and Kingston on Lake Ontario. Today the canal serves more peaceful purposes as it traverses the city and its bordering parks and markets gives it a unique countryside feeling.
Linking the two cities, the Ottawa River, baptized « The Great River » by the Algonquin First Nation, is rich in discovery. You will marvel at the impressive Fairmont Chateau Montebello, whose architecture, inspired by the great hotels of the Swiss Alps, features a structure entirely built of Red Cedar Logs. This bike ride along the foothills of the venerable Canadian Shield will have you relive the emotions felt by the Coureurs des bois and Voyageurs as they sought the mythical road to India and its riches.

Those who embark on this Tour, will have the fortune of seeing the city its full Spring splendor. Thousands of tulips, a gift of the Dutch Royal family in recognition of the refuge provided by Canada during World War II, give Ottawa a festive allure. Your bike will take you on a tour of the rainbow of colors provided by the flower beds especially groomed for the occasion throughout the city. Join the crew of the Latitude Amsterdam for this event organized under the theme of the return of Spring and international friendship.
