Guided island hopping on 4 islands

Kalavarda
Rhodes

During this cycling holiday you will follow the lead of your guide who will be riding along with you across four beautiful cycling islands in the southeast of Greece: Rhodes, Kos, Leros & Patmos.

While cycling you will become familiar with these islands of the Colossus and the Asclepeion, the crusaders and the sponge fishermen; islands with both Italian and Turkish influences. You will balance between pleasant cycling tours with cultural heritage excursions and boating trips on azure blue waters. The unknown Leros is the surprise of this cycling holiday: a green jewel. Patmos is a photogenic island full of monasteries and chapels. The trip will be kept as light as possible. You will cycle along the coastal regions and only occasionally encounter a real incline.

Daily Program

1 km = 0,62 miles
Day 1

Arrival on Rhodes

You will be picked up from the airport and brought to your hotel. We have used Kalavarda as our cycling village on Rhodes for ten years now. You will stay at Hotel Vouras, 900m from the sea. If you are arriving in the morning, there is an afternoon walking tour of Kalavarda, including a visit to the beach. Because Hotel Vouras is a small hotel, we might possibly book you into another hotel in the same area.

Day 2

Kalavarda, daytrip

39KM

Today you will visit one of the most important sites of Kalavarda: the ancient city of Kameiros. You can stroll around here through the labyrinthine streets, beautifully located on a plateau with views to the sea. Before or after having lunch at a seaside (fish) restaurant, you will explore a totally uninhabited and unadulterated stretch of coastline. After a ride of around 20km you will get to see the Chalki and its neighbouring islands. Depending on your preference, the final destination of this daytrip will be either the fishing harbour of Kameiros Skala (34km) or the castle ruins of Kritinia (39km).

Day 3

Kalavarda – Kos

38KM

This stage 38km or 44km, leading to Rhodes City, follows a trajectory that runs largely through the island’s interior. The butterfly valley Petaloudes can be found here as well as beautiful villages such as Theologos and Maritsa. Pastida is a large village and a very suitable place to stop for lunch. A particularly wooded route will bring you to the coast. Along the turquoise sea you will cycle into Rhodos Town. The trip ends at the port.  At the end of the afternoon you will take the boat to Kos.

Day 4

Kos – Roundtrip

30KM

Today starts with with a bicycle tour in the eastern part of the island. Highlight of the trip are the ancient temples of the Asklipion. The longer variant also visits the sulfur baths of Embros. In the afternoon there is enough time for sightseeing in the capital of Kos, which is well worth a visit. Ruins from ancient times snake through the city. Mosques remind us of the island’s Turkish period and other buildings betray the many years of Italian influence.

Day 5

Kos - Leros

The boat to Leros leaves around 11 a.m. and it takes about 1,5 hours. On its way the boat stops at the pittoresk port of Pothia on Kalymnos. . On Leros it’s a short but steep climb to your hotel, which has a great location with a view of the harbour and a castle.

Day 6

Leros, roundtrip

32KM

During this cycling trip you will visit both the remote church of Maria of the Crabs in Xirokampos and the little church on the micro-island of Agios Isidoros. This trip will allow you to see all the beautiful bays of this amoeba-shaped island. In Lakki there are many beautiful buildings from the Italian period.

Day 7

Leros, rest day

On this day you can cycle or walk to nice beaches (1 km). Or you can make a nice walk to the medieval castle. Inside the castle is a small museum and from the castle you will have beautiful views over the whole island.

Day 8

Leros - Patmos

The boat to Patmos mostly leaves in the early afternoon from Lakki (4 km ride) or Agia Marina (1 km). On its way the boat stops at Lipsi and then continues to Skala, the port of Patmos. From there it is 1 km to your hotel. All rooms of Hotel Hellinis are overlooking the port of Skala en the religious capitol of the island, Chora, white houses on top of a hill with the fortified monastery of the Knights of Saint John.

Day 9

Patmos, daytrip

33KM

Today’s trip consists of two loops. You start with the loop to the south to visit the two holy monasteries of Patmos. First you climb to the monastery of the Apocalypse. Here Saint John is said to have written the bible book of the same name. You continue uphill to Chora. Take your time to visit the monastery of the Knights of Saint John and to walk trough the town where all houses are white and one in five buildings seems to be a church or chapel.
The second loop goes to the north, to the beach of Lampi where the pebbles are red, and to the nice village of Kambos.

Day 10

Patmos - Rhodes City

In the morning you can spend the time in Skala (on the beach or in the shops). In the afternoon or evening we will return by ferry to Rhodes.

Day 11

Rhodes City, rest day

Use your rest day in Rhodes to get a closer look at this magnificent historical city. You can do this with a city walking tour that will not only take you to the highlights (such as the knight’s castle, the well-restored mosques and the Turkish bathhouse, the squares and the city gates) but also to the back streets and even the double city walls where you will find an unexpected oasis of quiet. The rich history of Rhodes goes back to the time of the crusades.

Day 12

Rhodes City, departure

If your departure is in the late afternoon or evening, or if you have booked some extra nights in Kalavarda after the tour, you will be cycling back to Kalavarda today, via the sea route, a route of secret paths that follows the coastline as much as possible.
You will be taken from Kalavarda to the airport for your return flight. If you are leaving in the morning, then a taxi will take you from Rhodes City to the airport.

For air travel luggage, commonly a weight limit of 20 kilograms per person applies. This limit also applies to the carriage of luggage. In addition, the weight per suitcase / bag should not exceed the weight of 15 kilograms. Our preference goes out to a weight of approximately 10 kilograms each in regards to the health of our employees.
At every stage of the trip your tour guide will inform you about when and where the bag drop off will take place, and about your suitcases disposal in the next hotel.

Clothing and Luggage

Wearing a good helmet can prevent serious injury in the event of a crash. During cycling it is advisable to wear a well fitting cycling-shirt that quickly absorbs and dissipates perspiration. Bike shorts with padding are recommended depending on your bike. Furthermore: a bag for the road, head protection (helmet), sunglasses and a camera.
