The landscape of Tuscany is one of the most beautiful and evocative in Europe, with rolling hills laced with verdant vineyards and cypress trees lining the roads. You’ll cycle from one incredible view to the next, admiring Renaissance art and architecture and getting to know the lands of many great artists of the past, such as Leonardo da Vinci and the composer Giacomo Puccini. The towns of Pisa and Florence do not need any further presentation, but in this tour you’ll discover also picturesque villages where you’ll be tempted by the excellent Tuscan cuisine.

Pisa, arrival

The city is famous all over the world for its magic Piazza dei Miracoli with the characteristic leaning tower, the bell tower of the city cathedral. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1987, besides a large number of monuments it also offers a friendly and lively atmosphere of a university city.

Day 2

Pisa – Lucca

45KM
Pisa – Lucca

Today you are pedalling northwards along the river Serchio for an easy stage. For those who wish a slightly longer itinerary, there is the option of going towards Massaciuccoli Lake before reaching Lucca.

Day 3

Lucca - Montecatini Terme

45KM
Pisa – Lucca

Through a panoramic road you reach the little village of Collodi and the town of Pescia. In Collodi, where the author of Pinocchio spent his childhood, you could visit the famous Pinocchio’s Park (created in 1962) and the aristocratic Villa Garzoni. In Pescia you could enjoy a quiet stroll among churches, palaces, Renaissance mansions and the local fl ower street market.

Day 4

Montecatini Terme, daytrip Vinci

60KM
Pisa – Lucca

Today’s route offers you again two possibilities. You can relax in one of the most famous thermal cities in Europe and stroll down the narrow lanes of the old city, which is situated on a hill and can be reached by a characteristic cable-railway. Otherwise a picturesque itinerary will lead you among villas of the Medici family, olive groves, vineyards and beautiful historical farms, going past Vinci, Leonardo da Vinci’s birthplace (visit to the museum possible).

Day 5

Montecatini Terme - Florence

49KM
Pisa – Lucca

Today you have to choose either to start pedalling directly from Montecatini or to shorten the trip through a short train transfer to Pistoia, rich in Romanesque and Renaissance monuments (in particular churches) and having one of the most evocative squares in Italy: Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square). From here back into the saddle, immersed in the Tuscan flatland, to reach Florence.

Day 6

Florence, rest day

Pisa – Lucca

It will be up to you to decide how to spend your time in one of the world’s most beautiful cities!

Day 7

Florence - Pisa

Frequently asked questions

  • When are the rental bicycles delivered?

The rental bicycles are as a rule delivered on the evening of the day of arrival and must be returned upon arrival at the last hotel.

  • What insurances does Cycletours offer?

    Cancellation insurance (insurance company Unigarant)

Holidays usually are reserved and paid weeks or even months in advance. If you need to cancel or abort the tour, that always leaves you with financial consequences. Therefore we recommend to arrange a cancellation insurance.
This insurance reimburse cancellation costs due to a serious impediment such as an accident, illness or death of relatives in the 1st or 2nd degree.

    Cancellation insurance incl. flight:

when paying 1% extra over the travel sum of your Bike & Barge tour + flight ticket, then the cancellation expense is insured should you need to cancel or should one of these components unexpectedly be cancelled. This on the condition that no alternative arrangement can be made, so the trip cannot be taken.

  • What can I expect of the hotels along the way?

For our trips, we generally utilize good 2-3 star hotels with a bathroom in each room. The accommodations vary a great deal, ranging from a very luxurious hotel to a simple chambre d’hôte and from a family hotel to a former cognac estate.

  • How long are the daily cycling stages?

The average daily distance on our Bike & Barge tours in Holland is 50 kilometers (32 miles).  But don’t forget that Dutch countryside is very flat and the stages, taken at a leisurely pace, take seven to eight hours including a number of breaks and visits.
The time spent on your bicycle is about 4 hours per day.

  • Can I bring along my own bicycle?

Yes, you may.  This has no bearing on the total cost of the trip, however, please state this at time of booking.  Sometimes an additional charge may be requested for the bicycle when transfering from one place to another.
